DAWN BANNISTER

Dawn was born in Rhodesia, later to become Zimbabwe, daughter of a District Commissioner. She grew up in the wild, unspoilt country areas to which her father was often posted. Here she grew to love the natural world, it’s light, colour forms and constantly fascinating detail.

After 4 years at the University of Capetown she began a teaching career eventually specialising in Fine Art up to “A” Level. Teaching these enthusiastic young artists was for her both a delight and an ever inspiring source of knowledge of her subject. During her teaching career her work was exhibited and sold at private exhibitions both on a solo basis and together with a good friend, Eichart Krog, a superb, professional water colourist. Dawn also had work selected for the National Gallery of Zimbabwe which included the National, National Women Artists of Zimbabwe and various competitive sponsored exhibitions.

Dawn’s total teaching career of more than 50 years sadly came to an end when her home farm, which she shared with her husband John and where they had grown flowers for seed, was “designated” by the Zimbabwean Government and therefore lost to them. With friends and relatives in Scotland she and John headed for the beautiful Border country where they are now settled in Innerleithen.

Whilst her preference has always been for painting landscapes, out of doors, Scotland’s weather has seen her change to photographing her chosen subject and working on the actual painting in the warmth and comfort of her studio. Water colours have become her main medium and an absorbing interest.

Both Dawn and John are lifelong animal lovers (they brought 4 dogs with them from Zimbabwe) so, having made a commitment to Arthurshiel Rescue Centre, Dawn will be very happy if the sales of her paintings help to make a difference to this very worthwhile organisation.
